Georges Rouault is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century .

His breaking away from Fauvism in the early 20th century, and his concentration on painting the isolation and pathos of human kind, has ensured his unique position in art history.

A deep sense of personal religeous values permeates his work.  In particular, his graphic work from the late 1930s until his death, displays an almost visionary and at times spiritual content.

Apart from the great Miserere Series, Rouault produced several other wonderful portfolios.  Our work is from a portfolio titled Soliloques, produced in Neuchâtel, Switzerland in 1944. This lithograph is a beautiful hand-signed example from that portfolio.
