Our fresh sheet comes from a collection of studies on sketch album pages, certainly drawn from life. Prins is known for creating pastiches of architectural and other elements from various locations, with additions of his own. Sheets of studies such as ours would have served as an archive of reference models for incorporation into later works.

Prins, a graduate of the University of Leiden, is known for his cityscapes, inspired by the architectural paintings of such masters as van der Heyden and Berckheyde.  They are meticulous and rich in their detailed rendering of building surfaces and decoration.
