Although Karel Frans Philippeau was born in Amsterdam and died in Prinsenhaag, he spent a great part of his life in Rome. His sojourn there was important in his development as an artist and much of his oeuvre shows an Italianate influence in both subject matter and style. Philippeau specialised in painting delightful genre scenes, often, as in our painting, showing family groups in outdoor settings.
