Christian Ludwig Griepenkerl was a reknowned Austrian painter of portraits, mythological and historical subjects. He studied in Vienna under the great Carl Rahl, assisting his teacher on frescoes in many of Vienna's principal buildings.

After Rahl's death, Griepenkerl became one of Vienna's leading decorative painters.  His frescoes and ceiling paintings adorn the Vienna Opera House, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Austrian Parliament Building, and numerous others.

As one of the Vienna Academy's most important professors, he was the teacher
of an entire generation of Austrian painters, not least among whom was Egon Schiele.
