Aignan-Thomas Desfriches
(French, 1715-1800)

Landscape With a Farmhouse, (ca. 1770)

Signed "Desfriches", lower center

Black Chalk and Grey Wash on Creme Laid Paper
6-7/8 x 9-3/4 in (17.2 x 24.6 cm)

Provenance:
Count Moriz von Fries, his collector's mark (L. 2903, his characteristic mount); Dr. Adam Politzer, his collector's mark (L. 2037, verso).

A student of Bertin and Natoire, Desfriches made his drawings from nature, embellishing his  landscapes with figures. His work shows a clear influence of the Dutch masters of the seventeenth century, such as van Goyen and Ruisdael.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts of the City of Orl
éans was originally established during the French Revolution to house the collections of Desfriches, and those of the painter, Jean Bardin.
