Max Carlier
(Belgian, 1872-1938)

Roses and fir branches in a copper bowl on a marble plinth, a glass bowl to the side

Signed 'M. Carlier' (lower left)

Oil on Canvas; 24 x 16 in (61 x 40.6 cm)

Provenance:
Collection of Galerie M. de Zeeuw, Raamsdonkveer, The Netherlands, from 1950 to 2001

Max Carlier was born in Tourcoing, France, close to the border with Belgium. He is, however, rightly considered a Belgian artist as he spent most of his life there and died in Schaarbeck in Brabant in 1938. He worked principally in Brussels, but traveled and worked throughout Europe. He has often been described as a virtuoso painter of still lives, and flowers in particular.  Our beautiful painting is an outstanding example of his craft and skill.
